Harris, N.Y. – Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center will present a free and informative diabetes program on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. at Catskill Regional Medical Center, 68 Harris Bushville Road, Harris, NY.  The event will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Room of the ASB Building.  Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

Diabetes educators and experienced physicians knowledgeable about diabetes will be on hand to discuss topics such as The Keys to Controlling Diabetes and Preventing Foot Ulcers.  Guest speakers will include Greg Atlas, D.P.M., C.W.S., Kolo Ediale, M.D. and Diabetes Educators Shelly DeHaan, R.D., C.D.E. and Barbara Shields, R.N.

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are over 25.8 million children and adults in the United States – 8.3% of the population – that have diabetes. In 2010, 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older. Diet, insulin, and oral medication to lower blood glucose levels are the foundation of diabetes treatment and management. Patient education and self-care practices are also important aspects of disease management that help people with diabetes lead normal lives.
