Catskill Regional Medical Center Holds Healthy Food Drive to Support Local Families

Catskill Regional Medical Center, in partnership with Eat Smart New York – a Cornell Cooperative Extension program, is collecting healthy food donations from December 4 – 15, 2017. The Nourish Your Neighbor healthy food drive promotes local change that makes it easier for our neighbors living and working in Sullivan County to eat well.

Food pantries fill the gap for families that struggle to make ends meet, but many of the donations typically received are high in sugar, fat, sodium, and calories, and often lack key nutrients. This can be especially hard on children and those living with chronic disease. Healthy food drives emphasize the need for nutritious foods such as:

  • Brown rice
  • Low-sodium canned vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • 100% fruit juice

“As a healthcare leader in the Hudson Valley, Catskill Regional Medical Center is committed to improving the health of our community including those who are deprived of healthy food,” said Greater Hudson Valley Health System Director of Community Health, Amanda Langseder. “We are proud to partner with Eat Smart New York to provide healthy food choices to those in need.”

Community members are encouraged to drop off their donations of healthy food items through December 15 at any of the donation bins locations at Catskill Regional Medical Center, 68 Harris Bushville Road, Harris, NY.

About Eat Smart New York Hudson Valley

Eat Smart New York (ESNY) Nutrition Education is free to all individuals who qualify for and/or receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). ESNY provides nutrition education materials and sponsors education events and classes in local communities on a variety of nutrition topics like: healthy eating on a budget, smart shopping for vegetables and fruit, healthy meal planning, basic cooking and food safety skills, weight control and physical activity. The goals of the Eat Smart New York program are to: eat more fruits and vegetables, drink less sugar-sweetened beverages, exercise more and balance calories eaten as part of a healthy lifestyle.
