Swallowing Therapy

In patients with dysphagia, it is essential to understand and evaluate swallowing to ensure that the most appropriate treatment plan is recommended. At Catskill Regional Medical Center, your comfort and safety is our priority. Our team of skilled speech language pathologists will work with you to learn more about your swallowing difficulties in order to plan your treatment.

Video Swallow Function Studies and a Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow (FEES) are both safe and objective assessments of swallowing disorders for patients with dysphagia. These procedures allow our speech language pathologists to determine what is happening at the back of your mouth and throat during the swallowing process, which helps us to provide the best rehabilitation plan.

After the procedure, you will learn if certain strategies or positions can help you swallow more efficiently and determine what kinds of food and liquid are the safest for you. These findings help our speech language pathologist develop an individualize treatment plan for you that may include:

  • Exercises to improve swallow function
  • Diet modification recommendations
  • Compensatory strategy training

  • Referrals for assistive and adaptive communication (augmentative and alternative communication- AAC)
