Colon cancer is one of the single cancers that can be treated and beatable. Adults who are at average risk are recommended to talk to their doctor about colorectal screening at age 50. There may be instances where adults under the age of 50 pose an increased risk.
Informational Sessions for Colon Cancer Awareness Month
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and as part of our commitment to remind the community of the importance and effectiveness of colon cancer screenings, we will be holding information sessions on March 1, 2 and 5.
The sessions will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day. Participants will also be signed up for a free raffle drawing. Monticello Bagel Bakery will provide blue bagels for those who stop by in support of Colorectal Cancer Awareness. If you have any questions, please call us at: 845-794-3300 ext. 2794
Common Symptoms for Colorectal Complications
Common symptoms for Colorectal complications include:
- A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool, that lasts for more than a few days
- A feeling that you need to have a bowel movement that is not relieved by doing so
- Rectal bleeding
- Dark stools, or blood in the stool
- Cramping or abdominal (belly) pain
- Weakness and fatigue
- Unintended weight loss
One of our goals at Cancer Services Program of Sullivan County is to have 80% of New Yorkers screened by the end of 2018. We are getting very close! As NYS has one of the highest Colorectal screening rates in the country.
Immunochemical (FIT) Tests
One of the most common tests used in screening is the Fecal Immunochemical (FIT) Tests. FIT Kits and often can be completed in the privacy of your own home. Statistics from the Center for disease control suggest that more Americans, over the age of 50, at average risk prefer FIT Kit screening.
Some benefits to using FIT Kits include:
- Many FIT brands require only 1 or 2 stool samples
- Positive screening FIT must be followed by colonoscopy
- Use FIT from spontaneously passed stool specimens and not an in-office DRE sample
- Patients do not need to adjust diet or medications to complete a FIT
