CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER PRESS ROOM

CRMC Highlighted in Healthcare Equality Index 2012 - 06/25/2012

June 25, 2012 - Harris, N.Y. – Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2012 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organization. CRMC earned top marks for its commitment to equitable and inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face challenges in accessing adequate health care.

CRMC was one of a select group of 234 health care facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff.  There were 15 hospitals from New York on the list, and CRMC was one of only seven New York hospitals who met all of the rating criteria.

HRC Family Project Director Ellen Kahn congratulated CRMC. “LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” said Kahn. “It makes a big difference to know that their local health care facility is fully committed to giving them the same care it provides neighbors and co-workers.”
