May 16, 2012 - Harris, N.Y. – The Health Information Library of Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has received an Outreach to Consumers Award of $9,800 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region at the University of Pittsburgh. The grant will fund a local health literacy campaign in Sullivan County.
With the CRMC Health Information Library as the lead, Library Manager, Maryallison Farley, will partner with Bonnie Lewis, RN, Coordinator of the Caregiver Resource Center of the Sullivan County Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Sullivan County Office for the Aging, to offer classes throughout Sullivan County on “Preparing for Your Appointment with Your Doctor.” The class will be offered to seniors, caregivers and underserved community members, such as those living on low incomes, or who speak English as a second language.
The grant funds equipment for both group and individual instruction, promotional materials, advertising for health literacy and mileage costs for the two lead partners. Other participating partners include the Literacy Volunteers, the Federation for the Homeless, Hudson River HealthCare, Sullivan County Public Health Nursing and several churches. The CRMC Health Information Library is open to the public and located on the first floor of CRMC’s main Harris campus. The Library provides free, up-to-date health information resources for patients, their families and residents of Sullivan County.
