October 22, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - On Saturday, October 16, more than 100 men, women and children, many in women's shoes, walked a mile around the grounds of Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), to help raise funds for Rape Intervention Services & Education (RISE) of Sullivan County. The fundraiser, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, is a project of the international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Net proceeds totaled more than $14,500 from walkers and event sponsors. "We will continue to do all we can to ensure that RISE remains alive in Sullivan County," said Steven Ruwoldt, CEO of Catskill Regional. "We're thrilled that men, and our community as a whole, stepped up to help support this extremely important program." RISE advocates for anyone who is or has been a victim of sexual abuse. Founded in 1987, RISE provides an array of services to victims of sexual abuse and offers prevention education, advocacy and assistance to victims, and accompanies them to the hospital, police or district attorney after an incident. RISE also offers confidential individual, family or couples counseling as well as support groups and professional training sessions. "We are grateful that the contributions will help sustain this community program. The awareness that this event has created for RISE is wonderful," said Cindy Zingher, Program Manager for RISE. "While the event may be over, there are opportunities for people to lend financial support or volunteer for our RISE program."
