CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER PRESS ROOM

CRMC TO HOST WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® TO BENEFIT RISE OF SULLIVAN COUNTY- 08/27/2010

Event takes place October 16, 2010 at CRMC’s main Harris Campus

August 27, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - On Saturday, October 16, men from the greater Catskill region will lead a one-mile walk, many in women's shoes, around the grounds of Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) to help raise funds for Rape Intervention Services & Education (RISE) of Sullivan County. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is the international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Male community members and leaders will proclaim their solidarity with the rape prevention movement with women and children marching at their side. Additionally, educators, students, law enforcement officers, elected and appointed officials, and others will participate. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10 a.m. at CRMC's main Harris campus. A reception will follow and include a short program, refreshments and educational booths. Anyone can walk, and same-day registrants are welcome. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women's shoes. The registration fee is $20 and participants may also secure contributions through pledges. Many sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses. "One in three women has experienced gender violence in her lifetime," said Cindy Zingher, RISE program director. "This violence does not just affect women. Men are hurt and angered when women they care about are raped." RISE advocates for anyone who is or has been a victim of sexual abuse. Founded in 1987, RISE provides an array of services to victims of sexual abuse and offers prevention education, advocacy and assistance to victims, and accompanies them to the hospital, police or district attorney after an incident. RISE also offers confidential individual, family or couples counseling as well as support groups and professional training sessions.
