Catskill Regional Medical Center To Host Walk A Mile In Her Shoes®

Rape Intervention Services and Education Program to benefit from fundraiser

The Rape, Intervention, Services and Education (RISE) Program at Catskill Regional Medical Center will host the 6th Annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes ® event, an international campaign to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The event will be held on Saturday, April 22 at the Sullivan County Government Center located at 100 North Street in Monticello, NY. Registration is $10 per person and participants can register the morning of the walk or in advance at www.crmcny.org/rise-walk. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. The walk commences at 10:00 a.m. and continues until noon.

Participants, including men, are encouraged to wear any type of women’s footwear – preferably in a shade of red – while participating in the walk. With a sexual assault act being experienced every 98 seconds and with one out of every six American women having been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, according to RAINN.org, this walk draws serious attention to the cause and to the services that the RISE Program provides in Sullivan County.

The RISE Program of Sullivan County advocates for people who are or have been victims of sexual violence. The Program provides individual and group counseling, as well as advocacy and accompaniment services to the emergency department, police station and court appearances. The RISE Program maintains a 24-hour rape and sexual assault hotline to which trained staff and volunteers provide callers with emergency crisis intervention, crisis counseling, information and referrals. The RISE Program 24 hour hotline is 845-791-9595.

“Putting an end to this type of violence in our community begins by talking about it,” said RISE Program Manager Debbie O’Malley. “The RISE walk has gained more and more support each year from participants of all genders. Our collective voice has grown louder and our capacity to serve those affected by sexual abuse has increased.”

Walkers can raise money by securing pledges. Pledge forms are available online at www.crmcny.org/rise-walk and registrants may also set up personal online fundraising pages. For additional information, contact the RISE Program at 845-794-3300, ext. 2440. Sponsorship opportunities are available and individual donations are accepted. The event will include raffles, prizes and refreshments throughout the day and all funds raised will directly benefit the RISE Program at Catskill Regional Medical Center.
