April 15, 2015 – Harris, N.Y. – The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event to raise funds for Catskill Regional Medical Center’s Rape Intervention Services and Education (RISE) Program of Sullivan County will be held on April 25, 2015 at the Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow and will include a short program, refreshments and raffles.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the theme this year is Preventing Campus Sexual Assault. On campus, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college.

“We must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, supporting survivors, and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions. The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is a fun way to raise awareness in the community about sexual assault, which may be a difficult subject for some to openly discuss,” said RISE Program Manager, Sarah Dittmar. “We hope to engage and educate the public to become active bystanders by taking a stand against bullying, physical violence, gender violence, and sexual assault. We believe we can RISE to end sexual violence!”

All are welcome to walk and register on the morning of the event. Men are encouraged (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes. The registration fee is $20 and participants may also secure contributions through pledges. Students with ID and children under 12 are free. Walkers can raise money to support the cause by visiting and pledging through a user-friendly, secure Web site.

RISE advocates for anyone who is or has been a survivor of sexual abuse. Founded in 1987, RISE provides an array of services to survivors of sexual abuse and offers prevention education, advocacy and assistance to survivors, and accompanies them to the hospital, police or district attorney after an incident. RISE also offers confidential individual, family or couples counseling as well as support groups and professional training sessions. All RISE services are free. The program maintains a 24-hour crisis hotline, which is 845-791-9595.
