October 17, 2011 – Harris, N.Y. – Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has announced that it now provides digital mammography screening technology at its Women’s Health Center at 60 Jefferson Street in Monticello, N.Y. With the new technology, the Women’s Health Center hopes to increase the number of area women who are screened regularly for breast cancer.

Selenia™ digital mammography incorporates digital imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp breast images. The images appear on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds, so there is no waiting for film to develop, which means less time in the breast imaging suite for patients.

Digital mammography offers a variety of practical advantages and patient conveniences. Since film is not used in the process, it significantly reduces the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure. Digital images are also easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films, which can be misfiled or lost in transit. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast, and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features make it easier for the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.

The CRMC Women’s Health Center is a certified Pink Ribbon Facility, a distinction awarded to a select group of health care facilities nationally, and is committed to the fight against breast cancer.
