CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES COMMEMORATIVE MENORAH – 03/18/2009
LOCAL SYNAGOGUE DONATES MENORAH IN MEMORY OF FALLEN KIN IN MUMBAI ATTACKS
December 31, 2008 – Harris, N.Y.- Catskill Regional Medical Center is now the home of a larger-than-life Menorah dedicated in memory of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, both killed in the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. The symbol of the great religious holiday of Hanukkah was donated by Landfield Avenue Synagogue of Monticello. On Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, CRMC President and CEO Steve Ruwoldt joined other hospital officials in dedicating the 10-foot-tall Menorah with Rabbi Bex-Zion Chanowitz of Landfield Avenue Synagogue, and many members of his congregation. Rabbi Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, were both killed during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which began on Nov. 26 and continued through Nov. 29. The Rabbi was conducting a tour as director of Mumbai Chabad House when terrorists stormed the house, killing him and his wife and most others inside. The married couple had family ties to the Hudson Valley and Catskills regions through the community of Kiryas Joel. Ruwoldt graciously accepted the gift, which stood in the hospital cafeteria throughout the holiday season. Ruwoldt said, “This holiday season, as we rejoice and celebrate with our friends, families, and co-workers, we should remember the selfless acts of others including Rabbi Holtzberg and his wife Rivka. This Menorah is a symbol of peace, and we are honored to call Catskill Regional Medical Center its home.” Rabbi Chanowitz said, “It is important that we not forget our fallen brother and his wife during this time of celebration. They were helping to spread a great word, and we should continue that message of faith and love in their memory. Let us never forget their efforts.”
