RISE PROGRAM TRANSITIONS TO CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER - 02/10/2010

February 10, 2010 - Harris, N.Y. - The Rape Intervention Services and Education (RISE) program of Sullivan County will continue its mission of advocating for anyone who is or has been a victim of sexual abuse. The program has transitioned from Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley to Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) as its lead agency, and has moved its offices to dedicated space on the 4th floor of CRMC's main Harris Campus. CRMC will assume oversight and fiscal responsibility of the RISE program and will conduct grant writing on RISE's behalf.

Cindy Zingher, Program Manager of RISE, said, "We are so excited to be part of the CRMC family. Plain and simple, we belong here. With the portals of access available to us, it is a perfect fit. Often, one of our first actions of support is to accompany a victim to the hospital, so our new location here is extremely convenient for all involved. With CRMC's reach, we will now be able to offer our services to Western Sullivan County, and we will have office hours one to two days per week in the Physician Office Suite at the Grover M. Hermann hospital in Callicoon, NY."

Steven Ruwoldt, CEO of CRMC, added, "RISE is such an important program for Sullivan County. Not only does RISE provide assistance to victims of sexual abuse, but the program also provides prevention education. CRMC is committed to advancing services to the community, and this is an excellent opportunity to ensure that RISE continues its invaluable program to the residents of Sullivan County."

"We are very pleased that we are able to transition the RISE program and its long time Program Manager Cindy Zingher, to CRMC where it can continue its critical work in the community," said Ruth-Ellen Blodgett, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley.

Since 1987, Rise has provided an array of services to victims of sexual abuse and offered prevention education. The program provides advocacy and assistance to sexual abuse victims, and will accompany the victim to the hospital, police or district attorney after an incident. RISE also provides confidential individual, family or couple counseling as well as support groups, prevention education and professional training sessions. The program maintains a 24-hour crisis hotline number, which is 845-791-9595.

RISE relies heavily on volunteer help and internships. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information on services offered, please contact the RISE office at 845-794-3300 extension 2442 or e-mail RISE@crmcny.org.

November 12, 2009 - Harris, N.Y. -Catskill Regional Medical Center, Sullivan County's premier provider of health care services, received a $3,000 donation toward the cost of new digital mammography equipment at its Women's Health Center from Combined Energy Services, a Sullivan County energy supplier.

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, Combined Energy Services (CES), a dependable supplier of gas energy to the Catskills, donated 1 cent to Catskill Regional for every gallon delivered by its "pink" delivery truck during the month. The funds will be used to support the purchase of digital mammography equipment at Catskill Regional's Women's Health Center, at 60 Jefferson Street in Monticello.

"Catskill Regional Medical Center prides itself on the advanced service and support we provide to our community, and this generous gift from CES will help us continue that mission," stated Catskill Regional's President & CEO Steven Ruwoldt. "Early detection can be the key to defeating breast cancer. The purchase of the latest digital mammography equipment allows us to provide a vital service to the community at the Women's Health Center."

Since the philanthropic program's inception in 2006 CES has donated all proceeds to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. This year the company's principals selected Catskill Regional Medical Center to ensure the local community would directly benefit.

CES President Mike Taylor said, "This program is a good way to give money back to a great cause while at the same time help to create increased public awareness that early detection is the key to survival.  We believe if this campaign sparks one person to get a mammogram and it saves them, it is all worth it."

The American Cancer Society reports Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Currently, there are about two and a half million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

The purpose of HRSA's Office of Rural Health Policy's Small Health Care Provider Quality Improvement Grant Program (SHCPQI) is to assist rural providers with the implementation of quality improvement strategies, while improving patient care and chronic disease outcomes. Improving the quality of chronic disease management in ambulatory care settings can improve health indicators and decrease emergency room visits and admissions to hospitals.

SHCPQI focuses on quality improvement for chronic diseases such as Diabetes and cardiovascular disease, among others. The grant program is available to support rural health care service providers efforts to improve patient health through enhanced chronic disease management by: 1) utilizing a patient registry system, 2) tracking and reporting specific health indicators using nationally accepted clinical measures, 3) assessing the need for quality improvement and developing additional performance measures, and 4) participating in technical assistance through peer learning workshops with fellow SHCPQI Program grantees, facilitated by a quality improvement specialist.

Today, 23.6 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, but nearly one in four don't know it. According to the American Diabetes Association, the disease is associated with an increased risk for a variety of serious, even life-threatening complications. Good diabetes management is essential to reducing those risks, and this program was developed to answer questions, provide important information and the tools needed for individuals to take control of their disease and stay healthy.

August 11, 2009 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), Sullivan County's premier provider of health care services, continues to advance patient care for its community, and was recently honored for its efforts by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

On Thursday, Aug. 6, Lynn Pollock, NYSDOH immunization program director, presented CRMC Birthing Center Director Jane Stuart, RN, with a Certificate of Excellence.

The honor is in recognition of the CRMC Birthing Center's records regarding the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg). In a recent review by NYSDOH of maternal and newborn documentation, officials reported that 100% of maternal charts had documentation of HBsAg test dates and results, and 100% of infant charts had documentation of maternal HBsAg test dates and results. In addition, it was also reported that 100% of babies were immunized for Hepatitis B at birth.

Stuart stated, "Our entire staff works very hard to not only meet but exceed the standards set by the NYSDOH. I accept this certificate on behalf of all of the CRMC Birthing Center nurses."

Steven Ruwoldt, CEO of Catskill Regional Medical Center, added, "The fact that CRMC is only the second hospital in the state to receive this award this year is evidence that our staff is performing their day-to-day responsibilities with the utmost care and detail. The strength and knowledge of our staff at CRMC enables us to provide professional and advanced patient care."

On Thursday, July 16, Kyle Henry, a Registered Nurse (RN) from Sullivan County Public Health Nursing Services, Danielle Cartuccio, RN, Sullivan County Public Health Nursing Services, and Lee Norris, Master of Human Resources (MHR), Public Health Representative, met with Stuart and CRMC Infection Control Practitioner Christina Winski, Master of Public Health (MPH), to review maternal and newborn records and assess the HBsAg screening and recording practices according to New York State Public Health Law. The law requires documentation of both maternal HBsAg test dates and test results for every woman admitted for delivery in maternal and infant medical records. CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER ON HIGH ALERT FOR SWINE FLU IN COOPERATION WITH STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Hospital physicians recommending everyday precautions to avoid spread of disease - 06/15/2009

June 15, 2009 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), Sullivan County's premier provider of health care services, is working in cooperation with state and local health officials to quickly identify and respond to any new cases of swine flu. There have been four confirmed cases reported in Sullivan County and many more throughout the state, prompting Governor David Paterson to activate the state's health emergency preparedness plan, putting all hospitals on heightened alert since late April.

The amount of confirmed cases in the state has also led to a more stringent testing policy from the New York State Department of Health. They recently announced that it will only test for cases of swine flu once a certain criteria of symptoms have been met.

"Swine flu is an influenza virus that is different from seasonal flu, but can also be transmitted among humans," said Rolland "Boomer" Bojo, RN, Clinical Director of Professional Nursing Services and Emergency Manager at CRMC. "Swine flu has symptoms similar to those of regular flu. Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms should contact their regular physician or health care provider. There are antiviral drugs available to combat the virus."

The flu may spread from person-to-person when someone who has the flu sneezes, coughs or even talks. The flu virus is put into the air and may be inhaled by anyone in close proximity. Occasionally, a person may become infected by touching something with the virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

CRMC recommends these everyday precautions to stay healthy:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.

  • Avoid people who are ill and stay home if you are experiencing symptoms.

  • Use a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue in a trash bin.

  • Keep your hands away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Clean shared space more often such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering wheels and office equipment.

  • Avoid sharing personal objects such as toothbrushes and utensils.

The grant, which was awarded to the Grover M. Hermann Hospital Division of CRMC earlier this year, supports community outreach programs on chronic disease. Recognizing the importance of proper disease management, the hospital developed this free monthly series to increase the public's awareness and understanding of a variety of chronic diseases, as well as the healthcare services and support programs available locally.

The grant program is available to support rural healthcare service providers efforts to improve patient health through enhanced chronic disease management by: 1) utilizing a patient registry system, 2) tracking and reporting specific health indicators using nationally accepted clinical measures, 3) assessing the need for quality improvement and developing additional performance measures, and 4) participating in technical assistance through peer learning workshops with fellow SHCPQI Program grantees, facilitated by a quality improvement specialist.

23.6 million People in the U.S. have diabetes, but nearly one in four don't know it. According to the American Diabetes Association, the disease is associated with an increased risk for a variety of serious, even life-threatening complications. CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER ON HIGH ALERT FOR SWINE FLU IN COOPERATION WITH STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Hospital physicians recommending everyday precautions to avoid spread of disease - 05/01/2009

April 30, 2009 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC), Sullivan County's premier provider of health care services, is working in cooperation with state and local health officials to quickly identify and respond to any new cases of swine flu. While there have been no cases reported in Sullivan County, in response to cases in New York City, Governor David Paterson has activated the state's health emergency preparedness plan, putting all hospitals on high alert.

CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER LAUNCHES STAFF WELLNESS PROGRAM
CRMC partners with American Heart Association to promote physical activity - 04/24/2009

April 24, 2009 - Harris, N.Y. - Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is encouraging its employees to shape up. Sullivan County's premier provider of health care services, CRMC is partnering with the American Heart Association to promote physical activity and decrease rates of heart disease and stroke through the Start! program.

CRMC launched registration for the Start! Walking Challenge on April 8 and has already signed up over 100 employees. In fact, there are currently 15 teams of more than nine people each who have registered via the online website, www.mystartonline.org. All physical exercise is measured for the challenge including weightlifting, biking and walking. Each registered employee receives a pedometer to help track their walking distance and then must enter it online. Bikers and weightlifters input their activities into the website which then converts each exercise into overall steps. At the end of each month, CRMC will present an award to the team and individual that has recorded the greatest amount of steps.

"Sometimes we become so involved with taking care of others that we ignore our own health," said CRMC Chief Executive Officer Steve Ruwoldt. "The Start! campaign offers the staff a convenient and rewarding way to stay healthy. When our employees are healthy, they are more productive and able to provide better care for our patients."

Physical activity is encouraged while at work. In fact, there are signs to designate "Start! Walking" routes inside the Harris facility and maps are available to define outdoor walking courses on the campus, as well. All of the pathways vary in distance and degree of physical challenge. A more challenging Start! path includes several staircases throughout the facility.

According to the American Heart Association, each year more than one-million Americans suffer a heart attack and 700,000 have a stroke. A leading risk of heart attack and embolic stroke is lack of physical activity. The American Heart Association also states that 70% of Americans are not getting enough exercise and blame lack of time and motivation.

The Start! program promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in an environment that's fun with family, friends and co-workers. The American Heart Association believes that physical activity is very important in the fight against the symptoms of heart disease and stroke. Symptoms include weight gain, bone loss, decrease in energy and a high stress level.

December 31, 2008 - Harris, N.Y.- Catskill Regional Medical Center is now the home of a larger-than-life Menorah dedicated in memory of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, both killed in the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. On Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, CRMC President and CEO Steve Ruwoldt joined other hospital officials in dedicating the 10-foot-tall Menorah with Rabbi Bex-Zion Chanowitz of Landfield Avenue Synagogue, and many members of his congregation.

Rabbi Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, were both killed during the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which began on Nov. 26 and continued through Nov. 29. The Rabbi was conducting a tour as director of Mumbai Chabad House when terrorists stormed the house, killing him and his wife and most others inside. The married couple had family ties to the Hudson Valley and Catskills regions through the community of Kiryas Joel.

Ruwoldt graciously accepted the gift, which stood in the hospital cafeteria throughout the holiday season.

Ruwoldt said, "This holiday season, as we rejoice and celebrate with our friends, families, and co-workers, we should remember the selfless acts of others including Rabbi Holtzberg and his wife Rivka. This Menorah is a symbol of peace, and we are honored to call Catskill Regional Medical Center its home."

Rabbi Chanowitz said, "It is important that we not forget our fallen brother and his wife during this time of celebration. They were helping to spread a great word, and we should continue that message of faith and love in their memory. Let us never forget their efforts."

CATSKILL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER AND ORANGE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER ANNOUNCES AFFILIATION AGREEMENT - 03/17/2009

June 25, 2007 - Middletown, N.Y. -  Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC) and Orange Regional Medical Center have announced an affiliation agreement with the goal of working together to enhance healthcare in the Hudson Valley. Catskill Regional will officially seek approval from the New York State Department of Health to become an affiliate member of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS), joining Orange Regional Medical Center which currently is the sole GHVHS affiliate. A press conference to discuss the affiliation will be held in the CRMC Board Room on Tuesday, June 26 at 1:00 p.m.

Orange Regional's President & CEO Scott Batulis said, "The affiliation agreement between Catskill Regional and GHVHS offers additional resources to Catskill Regional which ultimately will benefit the entire region. The affiliation agreement is not a full asset merger. It will not impact Orange Regional's financial position and will not affect Orange Regional Medical Center's new hospital construction project currently being planned. Orange Regional and CRMC will operate as two independent stand-alone hospitals under the GHVHS parent."

GHVHS will enter into a management contract with CRMC and will assume responsibility for day-to-day management of Catskill Regional. Under this management contract, the Senior Management team at Orange Regional will assist with all aspects of CRMC's planning and delivery of healthcare services.

A new Catskill Regional Board of Directors will be appointed by the Board of the GHVHS. Joyce Salimeno, currently Chair of Catskill's Board, will step down from the CRMC Board and become a member of the GHVHS Board. The individual selected to replace Ms. Salimeno as Chair of the CRMC Board will become a member of the GHVHS Board. Gerald Skoda has agreed to serve as acting Chair once a new CRMC board is selected. Darrell Supak, currently a member of the CRMC Board, will also become a member of the GHVHS Board.

As a GHVHS affiliate, Orange Regional will help Catskill Regional develop and enhance clinical programs while continuing to promote quality care. Rich Shapiro, the Board Chairman of GHVHS and Orange Regional, said, "We recognize that Catskill Regional is an extremely important part of the community. By working together with their Board and management, we can achieve many things that are difficult to do alone."

Ms. Salimeno said, "I am delighted to have taken part in bringing this exciting affiliation to fruition and look forward to serving on the GHVHS Board. This affiliation will provide a tremendous benefit to the community that we serve in the Hudson Valley region."

Among the areas of assistance, Orange Regional will help Catskill Regional develop a financial transition plan to address Catskill's short-term cash needs. Grant procurement, debt relief and restructuring strategies, revenue cycle issues, cost reduction and physician participation and support will also be areas of focus.

Both Boards of Directors and top administrators from each hospital have been working on the management agreement since December 2006. "There were many, many people involved in the dialogue about potential collaboration," said Batulis. "We would like to thank Senator John Bonacic who was instrumental in bringing the two hospitals together. Additionally, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther has been an ardent supporter of the hospital and the community. Also key to the agreement were the New York State Department of Health and New York State Dormitory Authority, Crystal Run Healthcare, Catskill Regional Medical Staff, managers and staff at both hospitals."

Licensed for 164 acute beds, CRMC is the sole hospital provider in Sullivan County and plays a critical role in caring for the residents of the region. CRMC provides services at its campuses in Harris and Callicoon and at its family health centers in Harris, Ferndale, Monticello and Wurtsboro. Focused on providing the highest quality care, CRMC has recently added a new MRI and a dedicated emergency response helicopter; and renovated its state-of-the-art Birthing Center to offer the best possible environment to welcome a new life into the world. Catskill Regional's Cancer Program holds the highest rating of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Catskill Regional is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Orange Regional Medical Center, formed by the merger of Arden Hill Hospital and Horton Medical Center in 2002, is licensed for 450 beds and has 520 doctors on its medical staff. Orange Regional has continued to bring many advanced medical services to the community including Diagnostic Cardiac Cath, electrophysiology, ultra fast 64-slice CT and Open Bore MRI among others. Orange Regional also provides multiple outpatient locations including the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion in the Town of Wallkill, which offers surgical and diagnostic services. Orange Regional is planning to build a 374-bed hospital with private rooms on 61 acres in the Town of Wallkill to be occupied in 2011.

Working together, Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center will redefine healthcare for the region.
